Tess Deguire -
Rocking On!

I'm Tess - I love singing - and my life has always revolved around my 3 music bands – Eyes of Alice, Raised Emotionally Dead and Guru Love Vibe! I was also a telemarketer for several years.

But 7 years ago, I got sick – really sick. I had asthma, arthritis, and many other health problems. I was also going through a lot personally, and found myself in depression all of a sudden – just not being able to get out of bed every morning. My sister Ann, who’s diabetic, would keep telling me to come to the food bank that the Eastview Centre ran – she'd ask me to come do this and that – I hardly ever listened to her.

But one day, I finally came to the food bank with her – and that changed everything.

The centre helped me get psychiatric help that I had always denied earlier. It helped me get much stronger. One day Francois (staff at the Food Access program) came to me and said he needed a cook for the Food Bank and asked me `Do you know how to cook? And I said ‘Sure! I'm a wonderful cook!’ And I started cooking at the Food Bank. I was already loving it here - the people, and everything else.

I now also volunteer at the Good Food Market (GFM), that the centre runs to make good food affordable for people to buy. I was one of the first volunteers to do so.  I go up to the Danforth and put up posters to get people from the neighbourhood to come and buy the affordable vegetables we have. I also sell the veggies.

A couple of years ago, I injured my shoulders in an accident, so I couldn`t volunteer to lift stuff anymore. But hey I`m a great storyteller, and I can still sell!

I`ve been here for 7 years and I come to the centre every week. My dream is for my music bands to become really famous. And for my sister to be cured of her diabetes. And despite my setbacks, I know I will get there some day.
