March 2017
Dear Members,
It has been wonderful to see so many of you using the Club in February, some even managing to get dinghies out on the water with the tail end of storm Doris providing some challenging conditions in the harbour for those and the Illusion sailors. We had a very busy weekend with all the Committee meetings, and are delighted to welcome our newly elected Members of BSC who are listed at the end of The Porthole. It is an exciting time to become a New Member, with a full programme of activities for the year ahead. You will notice that bookings are now being taken for Easter, so be sure to sign up early as we fully expect the Club to be very busy!
Sailing Report

A brisk SSW’erly breeze and not enough water in the middle of the harbour to start on time greeted the thirteen enthusiastic Illusionists and three race officers early on Saturday morning.  After a postponement of just over 20 minutes, the first race got away to a clean start. Click here to see the full report.

Art Talk and Supper
Members enjoyed a wonderful evening listening to an enthralling talk by Alex Williams on Cezaznne and Picasso, followed by a delicious French Bistro style supper. A great time was had by all and those who attended were even treated to the sight of barman Chris looking like René from 'Allo Allo', sporting a beret and the essential long white apron. Watch this space for the next instalment!
February Monthly Lunch
On Thursday 16th February, we were treated to a fascinating talk by Jeremy Gully titled "HOPE and an act of Faith", and a delicious pork belly luncheon. The event was organised by Rosamond Poncia, and was extremely well attended.
The Scottish Dancing in the Club has got off to an enthusiastic start in 2017, with two reeling evenings held in January and February, which were preceded by practice sessions. These have been very well supported and attracted about 20 dancers both evenings, some of whom had danced reels before, whereas others were there to learn and learn they did – brilliantly! As a result, great fun was had by all and the reels mastered have been The Dashing White Sergeant, Eightsome Reel, Hamilton House, The Duke of Perth and The Reel of the 51st.

The reeling evenings themselves were followed by supper in the dining room, where the inevitable debrief ensued, with various questions asked, including one wife enquiring somewhat crossly of her husband why he had let go of her in the middle of a swing, depositing her firmly – and painfully – on her bottom!

The next practice sessions are on Monday 20th March and Tuesday 18th April, with the reeling evenings on Thursday 23rd March and Thursday 20th April. Click here to book.
Committee Dinner
The Trustees, Committee Members and Keepers enjoyed their annual formal dinner in the Dining Room on Saturday night. With a total of 49 people in attendance, it was the perfect opportunity for Members to unwind after a busy day of meetings.
Art Workshop with Becky Samuelson
Friday 24th February saw the most recent in the series of Art Workshops by Becky Samuelson. It was a wonderful relaxed day. Attendees focused on painting trees with watercolour, and enjoyed a scrumptious two course lunch in the Bar. The next workshop will be on Thursday 25th May, click here to book.
In Memoriam

Brian Orange
It was with great sadness we had to report last week that Brian Orange passed away early on the morning of Thursday 23rd February. He was a keen and successful BOD sailor and had been a Member of the Club for 32 years, serving as Commodore from 2008-2009. Further details will be given when available.

Sally Crosthwaite
We were sad to hear about the death of Sally Crosthwaite who died peacefully on 7th February 2017. Sally had been a Member of the Club for 25 years, and was a talented botanical artist. A thanksgiving service will be held in April with family flowers only, and donations to Macmillan Cancer Support. Further details will follow when available.
Keepers Report from Jo Curry
Bembridge Sailing Club Library
To a great extent this is a library which has grown entirely by chance and through the kindness of various members over the entire span of the Club’s existence. In particular, I should mention the recent generosity of Pepe Stratton in donating various books of Vernon’s and Helen and John Crowder for their fine gift of a series of early Yachting Monthly bound volumes.
The serendipity of the resulting collection is a great part of its charm and among rather dusty tomes there are some good reads of sailing memoirs, some excellent pictorial guides of old yachts and ships, some naval history, local knowledge and useful manuals. The library is catalogued and very soon there will be an interactive version of this on the BSC computer system and this might be made available on the club website for members to find out exactly what is available on line.
In addition to the books on the shelves in the library itself there are some volumes in the dining room, beneath the trophy cabinets. These include valuable reference works including a very comprehensive set of Lloyds Register of Yachts which is a fascinating repository of information- just the thing to look up the details of great great Uncle Bertie’s yawl!
If members do wish to borrow any books could I ask that they enter the details in the notebook provided or let me know ( what they have taken. We are only missing one volume over the last nine years and it would be a pity to lose any more.
Similarly, if anybody has any donations or suggestions to add to our collection I would be delighted to hear from them.
Event Bookings and Cancellations
We are delighted to be able to offer Members an exciting and varied programme of events which runs throughout the whole year, and is being added to all the time. With so many events happening at the Club it is very important that you are aware of the booking and cancellation policy surrounding these events. The team work very hard to make sure that everything goes perfectly for you, with preparations being made weeks and often months in advance. In order for us to provide the level of service you expect, bookings must be received by the Club office no later than 48 hours prior to an event. Any enquiries received after this point will be added to a waiting list and will only be confirmed for the event if there are any corresponding cancellations. Similarly, cancellations made after the 48 hour cut off may be subject to the full charge unless the place is filled by someone from the waiting list.
Advance Notice of Road Closure
Island Roads have been in touch to inform us that they will be carrying out carriageway resurfacing works along Embankment Road commencing on 20th March for 9 nights working Monday to Friday between the hours of 19:30 and 06:00.

Row for James
As some of you may already be aware, our Rear Commodore House Dorian Campbell made the journey to Antigua in January, to be at the finish line for the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. This is a 3,000-mile unsupported race from San Sebastian in the Canary Islands to Nelson’s Dockyard English Harbour, Antigua. The particular team she went to welcome back onto dry land was one of the British entries – “Row For James” who undertook the challenge to raise funds for the James Wentworth-Stanley Memorial Fund, which is an organisation aiming to set up the first pilot in a series of non-clinical crisis centres for those at high risk of suicide. The challenge came on the 10th anniversary of the tragic death of James Wentworth-Stanley whose brother Harry is among the crew, with 3 of his friends; Sam Greenly (Dorian Campbell’s nephew), Rory Buchanan (BSC Member Andrew Buchanan’s son), and Toby Fenwicke-Clennell. The team finished the race in an impressive 39 days, 4 hours and 14 minutes, and they arrived in 2nd place at just 4 days behind the leaders. Not only was this a staggering feat when racing against professionals, they also set a record for charity fund raising by a trans-Atlantic rowing team – with the donations currently topping £590,000! Click here to read more about their endeavour.

Congratulations also go to BSC Member Alexander Simpson who was a participant in the “Lattitude 35” team, who competed under the US flag and were the winners of the race, finishing in record time.  The American team were on the finish line to welcome the Brits ashore and congratulate the “Row for James” team; they also made an incredibly generous $50,000 donation to their cause. Click here to find out more about the race.
