June 2016
Commodore's Section
Dear Members

I am delighted to inform you that at the Management Committee meeting last month we decided that the Salamander Room will be re-named the Vernon Stratton Room in honour of Vernon’s memory. This proposal also had the unanimous approval of the Sailing and House Committees. With the re-naming of Patch as Janson earlier in the year, we have now honoured the memory of both of our former Olympians, who did so much for the Club in their lifetimes. Vernon was a great encourager of the young and was very involved in the creation of the first cadet room (pretty much in the current position, in the back of the Boatmen’s Shed!); he introduced many new classes of dinghy and of course, the Illusions to the Club; he was passionate about explaining and teaching the theory of sailing; and he was instrumental in the creation of the new building in which the room is situated. I hope you will therefore agree that it is most appropriate that the room that is both our cadet room and our sail training room should bear his name.

Please join me in welcoming our new Members who are listed below. Please introduce yourselves and welcome them personally when you meet them in the Club.

I am very excited that we are now in a position to launch our new web-site. This has been a huge task completed in just a few months and I am very grateful to the team in the Office and to Laura, in particular, for all their hard work in making this possible. More information on this can be found below, but it will fundamentally change the way the Club interacts with Members: I hope you will find it easy to use - it is smart-phone, tablet and computer friendly - and that you will find it easier to find out what is going on at the Club and to book in for events by clicking in the relevant place. Please bear with us if there are initial teething problems: these will be sorted out as quickly as possible.

We have a busy summer lined up, both on and off the water and a well-subscribed cadet programme, although there are still places left. Preparations for the Ball continue apace and some categories of tickets are now sold out. Please book early for all events to avoid disappointment and I look forward to seeing many of you at them over the course of the summer.
Bank Holiday Weekend Sailing Report (28th-30th May)

Mixed fortunes over the long weekend with racing on Saturday seeing more boats retiring than finishing when the afternoon sea breeze failed to materialise. Sunday made up for it with a pleasant northerly providing just enough wind power to ensure that both fleets were able to complete two races. And Monday's northerly F5 was definitely not for the faint hearted!

Thirteen Redwings started from a laid line between Pepe & Garland with Morton as the windward mark; although everyone initially made progress in the light easterly breeze, it was not long before they found themselves coming to a halt as the wind died. It was certainly an interesting sight... Click here to see the full report.

BSC Cadets Alexander Huber and Gus Laughton-Scott are competing in the RS Feva Nationals & Eurocup Regatta in Weymouth on the 2012 Olympic course hosted by the National Sailing Academy. This year's regatta is a record size with 110 entries including international sailors from a number of countries. The RS Feva is now one of the most competitive two-handed dinghy sailing fleets in Britain and Europe, so it should be a great learning experience for the boys. The event consists of three races per day on the Weymouth Olympic course running from 28th-31st May, so 12 races over 4 days.

While many other cadets are studying for common entrance and GCSE exams, Alexander and Gus are augmenting their studies with revisions of The Racing Rules of Sailing, the Regatta Notice of Race, the Regatta Sailing Instructions, plus teach-in’s on rules, tactics and large fleet race starting techniques. Support and safety boat services are being provided by Bruce Huber together with Jacqueline & Olly Laughton-Scott.
May at BSC

Monthly Thursday Lunch
The Club’s monthly lunch organised this month by Mrs Anne Biddle took place on the 19th May followed by an Illustrated Talk by Jane Flower on ‘Plants and Plant Hunters in a Golden Age’. Around 50 Members enjoyed a 2 course lunch in the Dining Room before sitting back to enjoy a fabulously informative illustrated talk by Jane Flower.

Becky Samuelson Pen & Wash Workshop
May 13th in the Club Library
A wonderful day enjoyed by the 9 ladies who took part. Becky’s informative and relaxed approach encouraged the ladies who skills ranged from total beginners to the experienced. A two course lunch was provided and all too soon it was time to pack up.

Becky Samuelson is having another Workshop on the 17th June with spaces still available, click here to email the office and book.
Saturday 14th May was the Wedding Reception of Joe and Tanya Robertson at the Sailing Club.
A beautifully sunny day, perfect for when the couple sailed in on to the Sailing Club pontoon from the Church after their wedding vows. 100 guests awaited them on the gravel with a glass of bubbly and beautiful music being played on the Cello!
The Dining Room had a port and starboard theme, and guests celebrated until late into the night.
Scow Week

2016 Scow Week is round the corner so it’s time to get our beloved boats in the water, check them out and prepare for action!  A rare occurrence at Bembridge Sailing Club!!  Two changes to this year although the basic programme will remain roughly the same – most of you seem to like to format so why change it;  The Racing Team will be competing with Brading Haven Scows on two of the days and this year we are creating a third group – the Pirates!  For the less competitive fun loving amongst you we will organise a different activity every day – treasure hunt, excursion,  tag, picnic and fancy dress are all being considered but some are weather dependent so we might have to be a bit flexible.  You can move between the groups but it would be helpful to know in advance what you are planning so that we can organise enough support boats for everyone.

Please PLEASE sign up with the Club by clicking here to let us know which events you will be attending.

The price is £60 for the week or £20 per day which includes all the organisation and refreshments but excludes the supper and lobster lunch.  We’d love you to sign up for the whole week but you can also join us on a daily basis if you want.

John Harbord-Hamond will very kindly be overseeing the sailing side from his boat Emma and we hope to have our faithful volunteers back to help us.  You know who you are and I’m coming to get you!  Changes, additions and comments from last year are very welcome so please swing them my way.  Scow Week is all about getting together, having some fun and building confidence on the water so let me know if I can improve on anything – except the weather!!

Lots of best wishes to you all and roll on August!

- Ros Pollock

Congratulations and thank you to all Members who took part in an informal Scow race with Beaulieu Sailing Club. It was a great success, with Mark Downer taking line honours and they are keen to come to us in the near future to race in our boats.

We have also been invited to participate in a Team Racing competition against Lymington on 10 September this year. Please let us know if you would like to compete, we already have the beginnings of a team.
