Picture perfect photo competition

Council received a record response to its Mackay Through The Lens photo competition.
 
The competition asked residents to photograph what they love about living in the Mackay region.
 
More than 2000 photo entries were received via the council website.
 
Liam Murphy (pictured with Mayor Greg Williamson) won the major prize with an image of the newly painted water tower at Slade Point.
 
The people’s choice category was won by Eliana Fernandez with a photo of “Molly” the kangaroo at Cape Hillsborough.

Liam won a $2000 Garrick’s Camera House voucher and Eliana won a $1000 Camera House voucher.

Skate park to open this weekend

Camilleri Street District Park’s youth hub will be opened to the public from this Saturday (November 9).
 
The youth hub, which is stage one of the park upgrade, features a skate park, pump track, half basketball court and hit-up wall.
 
The project is jointly funded between Mackay Regional Council and the Queensland Government who helped fund the project through a $1 million election commitment.

Australian South Sea Islander ink on display

Artspace Mackay is uncovering the tattoos – and stories behind them – of many local Australian South Sea Islanders in a new photographic exhibition opening tomorrow (November 8).
 
Sacred Ink: Connecting to culture explores and highlights how the art of tattooing has been embraced by the community as a means of connecting to their South Sea Islander heritage.

Woodlands ideas session

This afternoon at Broomdykes Drive Park you can enjoy a free sausage sizzle, have your face painted or get involved in a treasure hunt tour.

It’s all part of the “ideas session” for the upgrade of Woodlands District Park, open to the public any time from 3.30pm to 6.30pm.

The aim is to transform the parklands into a sought-after destination for leisure and social activities.

Residents who can’t make it to the ideas session can contribute their ideas on Connecting Mackay.

Aussie Day event grants closing soon!

Council’s Australia Day event grants will close midnight this Sunday (November 10).

Not-for-profit groups can apply for up to $1000 to help support their Australia Day event and share their Aussie pride with their local community.
 
To be eligible, events need to be held on Australia Day 2020 (Sunday, January 26), be free for all to attend and held within the Mackay Regional Council area.

Have a say on region’s economic growth   

Council has released two draft strategies for public consultation.
 
The Economic Development Strategy 2020-2025 sets a clear framework designed to support employment and investment outcomes through advocacy and leadership, investment attraction, industry development and workforce and skills.
 
The Mackay Region Events Strategy 2020-2025 focuses on the acquisition and support of events and increased economic prosperity through events.
