Register now for spring sports and activities

It may be cold outside, but now is the time to register for sports and activities for the spring season. Many sports and activities have registrations in January, including baseball, softball, soccer, track, tennis and BMX. Many of our youth league programs are administered by volunteer organizations, so dates and times of registrations will vary. For specific information on the activities your child is interested in, see the athletics web page. Here you will find information on youth baseball, softball, soccer, track and BMX. Many registration deadlines are fast approaching - don't be left out!

Adult spring softball, kickball and cornhole registration begins later this month. For those interested, you can download a registration packet (available soon) on the web page for the specific activity of interest. See the athletics web page for a listing of all programs.

New basketball court and game room at Ron Anderson Recreation Center

In December, the Atlanta Hawks and Cobb County PARKS staff hosted a Holiday Giving Pop-Up event at Ron Anderson Recreation Center and distributed holiday gifts to 100 families in our community. This drive-through event celebrated the grand opening of the new co-branded Atlanta Hawks outdoor basketball court and new multi-purpose game room in the recreation center. The basketball court located at Wild Horse Creek Park is the 28th built by the Atlanta Hawks Foundation since 2015. The game room is the Hawks fifth room renovation since the beginning of this initiative in 2019, and the first in Cobb County.

Silver Comet Trail to be closed for bridge decking replacement

The Silver Comet Trail will be closed at the East/West Connector overpass bridge, from Jan. 4 to Feb. 5, for bridge decking replacement by Cobb Department of Transportation crews. Closure notification signs have been placed on the trail and at all restroom buildings. We thank you for your patience during this time.

'Bring One for the Chipper' after the holidays

Recycle your live Christmas tree this holiday season. Recycled trees create mulch, fuel, wildlife habitats and other useful material. Keep Cobb Beautiful staff will once again sponsor free recycling drop offs during Bring One for the Chipper. Live trees will be accepted at select Home Depot locations and two Cobb County parks starting on Christmas Day and ending on Saturday, Jan. 9.

Flocked trees will not be accepted as they are harmful to wildlife. Trees must have all decorations, mesh, lights, stands and strings removed prior to drop off. Free mulch is available upon request and free saplings will be available, while supplies last, at participating locations 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 9.

For more information or to see the drop off locations, view the event flyer by clicking here.

Mable House recognized for 'Best Family Programming' in metro Atlanta

Mable House Complex -- comprised of the Mable House Arts Center, Historic House and Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre -- was recently honored by "Atlanta Magazine" for Best Family Programming in the Arts and Culture category. Congratulations to our employees for this recognition of the creative ways they found to engage new audiences during this year's pandemic.
“We are beyond honored the Mable House Complex is named in this year’s issue,” Mable House Arts Center Coordinator Libby Geiselmayr said. “We are an essential part of the community, particularly in South Cobb, and to be able to stretch ourselves and our programming to meet the needs of the area during these unprecedented times has been tough. This award validates every atypical, outside-of-the-box idea we’ve tried to implement, and we are thrilled others are excited about the bends and turns we’re making, too.”
During normal operation, Mable House Arts Center is full of exciting events year round. It houses a sizable art gallery that rotates exhibits, offers a variety of arts classes for adults and children, seasonal art camps and theatre productions. This year, Mable House's creative scheduling of classes for families, seniors and kids has made it a popular feature in Cobb County for people of all ages. The historic Mable House, ancestral home of the Mable family for whom Mableton was named, was used as a hospital during the Civil War and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre is a state-of the-art 2,500-seat facility.

Cookies for Santa project a success

The first Cookies for Santa project was a huge success. Ward Recreation Center received a massive number of donations from the community and were able to make bags for more than a hundred families. The bags were given to Georgia Division of Family & Children Services, Calvary Children's home as well as our community. We want to thank the Snyder family, Publix, Marietta Women's Club, Credit Union of Georgia and our community for their generous donations to this great cause. We are looking forward to what Cookies for Santa 2021 will bring.
