National Events Hosted by Cobb PARKS

Cobb County PARKS will be hosting two national level events in the month of May. The Dixieland Nationals BMX event will bring hundreds of racers to Cobb for their annual event, and Harrison Tennis Center will be hosting the National 12s Level 2 tournament, which will bring many top national tennis players into Cobb.

The Dixieland Nationals is an annual BMX event held at the state-of-the-art bicycle motocross racing track at Wild Horse Creek Park in Powder Springs. The event is hosted by Cobb County BMX and will attract hundreds of racers from all over the country. All ages and levels compete in this event, including the top BMX racers in the country. Past events have included some of the USA Olympic team members and medalists. This event is open to spectators free of charge, and promises to provide many exciting races throughout the weekend. For information on Cobb County BMX, see their facebook page.

The National 12s Level 2 tennis tournament returns to Harrison Tennis Center May 21st-23rd. This event will attract many top national players in the 12 and under division for boys and girls. Cobb PARKS and Harrison Tennis Center has hosted a national tournament annually since the early 2000s (with the exception of 2020 for COVID). Past tournaments have had players that have later competed on the professional circuit. This event is free of charge for spectators, so come out and see some great tennis! For tournament information and tournament draws, see website.

These national events are possible due to the quality facilities and programs we have in Cobb County. Not only do these provide recreational opportunities for Cobb County residents, but they provide an economic impact bringing dollars into Cobb. Please come out and enjoy both of these major sporting events taking place this month!

Violet F. Stout Park

PARKS will be taking bids later this month for the construction of Phase I of the master plan build-out of Violet F. Stout Park.  The park is located at 5315 Brownsville Road, Powder Springs and is planned to be utilized by Cobb County’s equestrian community.  The park is a little over 300 acres with Sweetwater Creek running through a portion of the property.  Planned elements of Phase I include a deceleration lane, turn lane, and widening of the park entrance to accommodate horse trailers, as well as vehicular and pull-through trailer parking, an open arena, and restrooms.  A bridge over the creek is also planned to allow travel on horseback to other portions of the property that are currently not accessible from the parking area.  PARKS hopes to begin construction in the Fall and expects construction to take around a year. You can view the master plan for the park here.

New Playground Scheduled for Thompson Park

If you have noticed some construction work around Thompson Park, a new playground is being installed! Work has been completed to remove the old playground equipment and the new playground is in process of being constructed. Work should be complete in mid-to-late May.
