PARK INNOVAARE: Newsletter January / 2017

“Switzerland Innovation”: successful 1st year

On January 18, 2016, the Swiss national innovation park “Switzerland Innovation” was officially launched and its five sites officially became a part of Switzerland’s biggest initiative in innovation (read here about the event at PARK INNOVAARE). This month, the foundation is taking stock of its first year in operation, having hosted delegations from Thailand, Singapore, Russia, Brazil, USA (Boston and San Francisco) and Japan.

For PARK INNOVAARE, the year brought a great deal of international awareness and many good, valuable contacts that will support its development according to its mission to be the place where – based on the large research facilities of the Paul Scherrer Institute – innovations in accelerator technology, advanced materials & processes, human health and energy are brought to market more rapidly than anywhere else. #WhereInnovationAccelerates.
Snap Poll: How good are you at product and technology innovation?

What approaches are used to manage uncertain technology development versus rapid product development? What kind of collaboration can help increase innovation? How can you measure the results of innovation investments? These are just some of the key questions in innovation and technology management that separate the good from the very good.

PARK INNOVAARE has created a snap poll on product and technology innovation maturity. Companies of all sizes are invited to participate in this “quick check”. Results will be disclosed and discussed at INNOVATION in PRACTICE on February 7th

Two new residents at #WhereInnovationAccelerates

PARK INNOVAARE has signed rental contracts with two innovative companies. Swiss Hydrogen SA develops clean energy solutions based on hydrogen for a variety of applications allowing for zero-emission electricity production.
Crystallise! AG is a young company that provides crystallographic services for identifying small molecule compounds and addresses the chemical, pharmaceutical and agro-industries.

"What we are good at..."

“What are we good at…” is the showcase of PARK INNOVAARE. Our resident companies present their key competencies and share their plans for the future and/or their needs. Today we are featuring Excelsus Structural Solutions Switzerland, at PARK INNOVAARE since April 2016.

Excelsus Structural Solutions AG:
X-Ray Powder Diffraction for the industry’s success
Excelsus Structural Solutions provides scientific consulting and analytical services in the field of synchrotron X-Ray Powder Diffraction (SR-XRPD) to the industry, in particular for pharmaceuticals.

We make the latest academic scientific developments readily available to industrial partners while meeting their unique requirements in terms of speed, data quality and confidentiality. Our services include data analysis, interpretation and the design of non-standard experiments. Our strong experience allows us to understand the needs of our customers and propose the best experimental conditions to meet those needs. Qualitative and quantitative structural analyses with unprecedented sensitivity (down to 0.01% wt) for the detection of traces in pharmaceuticals are our strongest achievement. This supports pharmaceutical companies in their continuous effort to improve the characterization of their products via novel analytical tools, in line with the requirements of health authorities.
You can meet Excelsus Structural Solutions AG at one of our workshops INNOVATION in PRACTICE (March 7), where the team and their client Novartis AG will present their achievements.

This year, Excelsus Structural Solutions celebrates its five-year anniversary, an important milestone for the company. We wish Excelsus many years of success, new challenging projects and opportunities for cooperation, and exciting prospects for business development.
Choosing between lean development, agile development and systems engineering

Approaches to improving product development processes are manifold; examples include lean development, agile development or systems engineering. The question is: which one serves companies’ needs the best? In his analysis of the three approaches, Andreas Rülke, our guest expert, a management consultant focusing on product development and innovation management, addresses this question and provides an overview of when and where each of the three approaches can be applied.

Socio-technical thinking: a prerequisite for innovation

In light of recent technological leap, ground-breaking changes are expected to happen that will radically change industrial production. However, observations show that the latest technology is being implemented in organizational structures that are not suited for it. Thus, companies are missing out on their full innovation potential. The solution to the problem, according to Professor Anton Wäfler from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW), lies in finding a smart design for the interaction of human, technology and organization.
