Art Center Morro Bay

To champion art as essential to life and give our community a creative voice

From the President’s Desk

The first Art in the Park of the season, was a huge success due impart to Bob Rodger who works tirelessly to setup and take down the MBAA booth!  Sue Palmer has taken over staffing and managing shifts while several MBAA members pitched in as a docent or rover.  Participating vendors were thankful for the short breaks provided by our members, and a wonderful sense of accomplishment was felt while a team effort helped to sell a large photograph for Floyd Snyder!  Sales of jewelry and cards were good too.   If you wish to participate in the July MBAA Art in the Park booth, watch for the signupgenius in your email or contact Sue Palmer 805-441-5722.

Debra Joy Groesser is a professional artist from the state of Nebraska.  Debra is a signature member and President/CEO of the American Impressionist Society, a Signature member of Laguna Plein Air Painters Association and American Plains Artists.  She earned the distinction of Master Signature member of Plein Air Artists, Colorado.  She is an elected artist member of Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters and the Salmagundi Club in New York.  Her work has been featured in national art publications and is represented by several prestigious galleries.

Flower arrangements designed to compliment selected photos were donated by Floral Design of SLO County for, Thru The Lens.  Thank you Barbo Bond and Nancy Johnson for your generosity!  We appreciate the expertise and hard work by juror, Kerry Drager.   Kerry explained why each winning image was chosen for each award.  Brushstrokes is an exhibit you won't want to miss!  The next art exchange date is Tuesday, June 26, 10am – 2pm.  The exhibit, Rock and the Marketplace, will feature artwork in all media within both galleries.  The theme of this show includes iconic Morro Rock and the energy encompassing the people, fruits and vegetables found in open air markets, such as farmers market.

Lately, people have asked if they may remove artwork days before a show has ended.  Please, do not remove art before exchange day.  Emergencies do occur.  If you have an emergency, please contact me to make prior arrangements.

Effective June 2, 2018, Paso Robles will have an additional area code.  For areas that are impacted, you will need to dial a 1 + area code, before the number from now on.

The People’s Choice Award, in conjunction with Go Figure, was a tie vote going to Carl Berney for his sculpture, Solace and Christine Cortese for her oil painting, Me and My Crown.  People’s Choice Award winners are allowed to enter a future show with all entry fees waived.  Congratulations Carl and Christine!

Love and Work
Presentation by Art Historian/Lecturer Tess Wright

  Sunday, June 23, 3:00 - 5:00pm

The demands of love and creative expression present major challenges for men and women whose careers are intertwined.  The pathways explored by artists to attain love, while rewarding creative expression, is particularly complex.  Psychiatrist, Sigmund Freud, considered love and work to be the cornerstone of our humanity.  He reflected that perhaps one day in retrospect, the years of struggle in love and work will strike us as the most beautiful of endeavors.

Tess Wright explores the complexity of romance in famous artist partnerships who achieved rewarding and creative experiences, heightened by sensual experiences and erotic attachments.

Ms. Wright will reveal the dynamic forces that brought about complexities, competition and great achievements by notable artist couples such as Georgia O'Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, Pablo Picasso and his muses.

With a master's degree in art history and design and an equivalent degree in the field of psychology, presenter Tess Wright’s research has centered on artistic content as well as the artist's life experiences.  Her passion to explore and share with art-minded individuals the personal lives and relationships that influence the artist's work has led her to develop a variety of lectures on women artists, artist couples, and women in Surrealism.

Don’t miss this in depth discussion focusing on romantic partnerships and the artwork they created. Read more ...

Art in the Park

Memorial Day Weekend

Meet our Community Outreach Director, Sue Palmer. Sue has taken charge of the Business Art Program and staffing our Art in the Park booth.

Kaya Gwinn face-painting at Art in the Park

Many thanks to Steve Powers for organizing such a unique and talented group of artisans to exhibit their work.  The weather was generally kind to everyone over the Memorial Day Weekend for another successful Art in the Park.

Morro Bay Art Association member Floyd Snyder sold a gorgeous 20” x 30” photograph, which was hung in the Art Center booth along with other members’ artwork.  It took a group effort, including board President Pat Newton, to make the final agreement that brought the sale to a close.  Floyd ordered it special for the customer and will be bringing it to the gallery in a few days for pick-up.  Ellen Lodge, one of the Association’s newest members sold a very nice piece of jewelry.  Many other members brought their cards, jewelry and paintings to the art center booth to highlight our local talent. Our booth neighbor lent us his clasps to secure our tent closed during the night and he taught Sue Palmer some tricks of the trade regarding the canvas tent. Our wonderful team of rovers, who allow artists to step away from their booths for a short break, will be wearing new neon vests next year with the Morro Bay Art Association logo clearly printed!

WE NEED YOU!!!

So much goes on behind the scenes, and changes occur seemingly by magic. Truthfully, Art Center Morro Bay is only as successful as the volunteers who manage and operate it.  Currently, we have an urgent need for board members and volunteers.  Although not everyone is able to give as tirelessly as others, we need your support, now!  Many of these positions can be shared or arranged to allow working with a partner.

Here are some of the areas in which we can use your expertise:
Letter writing (new member welcome letters, donor letters, thank you notes)
Grant Writing (identify sources, work with SPOKES, write grants)
Art in the Park (set-up & tear-down, staff MBAA booth, provide vendor breaks)
Hospitality (set-up food & coffee, set chairs, tidy up activity room)
Finance Assistant (make deposits, assist Treasurer)
Maintenance (light building upkeep)

Please contact me if you would like to become the next Treasurer assistant, Marketing Director, Gallery Director, Docent Director, or are willing to share responsibilities in any of these positions.  Do you love to be around people, work on your computer at home or possess book keeping, social media or database skills? Would you be able to serve on a committee?  If you have ever considered one of these impactful positions, now is a great time, and training is provided.  Email Pat Newton at artbypatricianewton@gmail.com or phone: 1-805-423-1100.

The Zentangle Method© of mindful creation is a way to relax, focus and expand one’s imagination. Through guided systematic patterns, students learn to trust their creativity, increase awareness, respond confidently to the unexpected and discover the fun and healing in creative expression.
