2016 was a wonderful year for MBAA, and 2017 will be even better! Much of our success is due to members like you and a dynamic board of directors. The Holiday Installation Dinner was a sold-out smash success. We bid a sad farewell to 3 of our most dedicated board members: Alice Isaac (VP), Ann Brown (Director at Large) and Sandi Heller (Secretary). After years of service, they now have more time to make art, and you’ll be seeing more of them on Creativity Day. On their heels we say, “Welcome Aboard!” to Janet Hillson (Secretary), Lynn Douglass (Docent Director) and Juliana Morse (Membership Director), a trio of talent with lots of experience.
The horizon looks very bright for MBAA! We’ve got a pile of new workshops, from Clay Tile Sgrafitto to Pine Needle Basketry; from acrylics to watercolor to oil painting and pastel. Our Second Monday Demo calendar is filled with new artists, new styles and new mediums. Read on for more information about where Art Center Morro Bay and the Association is headed in 2017… and welcome to an exciting new year!

The Art of Sgraffito Workshop
with Jackson Gray
Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present a workshop in the ancient art of Sgraffito for ceramics on January 16 from 9:00am - 12:00pm. Cost is $113.00 which includes materials.
Sgraffito is a technique produced by applying layers of plaster tinted in contrasting colors to a moistened surface of unfired clay. The contrasting slip or glaze is then scratched to reveal parts of the underlying layer.
Jackson Gray is a studio potter from San Diego who has been working in clay for 25 years. Her work has been exhibited at the American Crafts Council show in San Francisco; Contemporary Crafts Market in San Francisco, Santa Monica and Pasadena; Rio Grande Art Festival in Albuquerque, New Mexico; Art in the High Desert in Bend, Oregon and various locations throughout San Diego County.
During this workshop, Ms. Gray will provide clay tiles ready to decorate with Sgraffito. This workshop is suitable for beginner to advanced. Bring your own design ideas or choose from those provided. Your completed tile will be sealed, fired, framed and ready for giving or hanging approximately one week after the workshop. Click here to register for this unique workshop, or contact KC Caldwell at 540-1470 or email: fogcatchers@gmail.com
From the Gallery - Dianne Ravin, Gallery Director
Our annual Holiday Winter Faire opened this year with a record number of submissions and an exceptional array of fine art, crafts, and a unique selection of holiday gift items. Thanks to all you artists and artisans who contributed your work- and to our talented team of gallery volunteers who put it all together - making it a work of art in itself!
A special thanks to Hallie Wieser, who generously donated her artfully crafted quilt for our holiday raffle, with all proceeds going to the Art Association. The winning ticket will be drawn at 12 pm on December 23rd. (Take-Out day) and the winner will be announced in our next newsletter.
Our 2017 Show Schedule is now online! (see Gallery \ Exhibit Schedule) with a link to each show’s “Entry Form”. These forms can be printed from the webpage, and all your information completed before entering your artwork – saving everybody lots of time at Take-In.

SECOND MONDAY DEMO Jacqueline Kamin
JANUARY 10 3 - 5pm
Jacqueline Kamin is a member of the Oil Painters of America, the California Art Club, where she serves on the Board of Advisors, and the Salmagundi Club. She also serves as President and Master Signature Member of American Women Artist. She is on the staff of the Artists' Guild and teaches workshops with David Leffel and Sherri McGraw live and through Bright Line Fine Art studio. Don't miss this demo by a nationally renowned artist and instructor!
Now in her seventies, Bartell examines what advancing age means in her life and art. She translates this new awareness using encaustic media, adding sculptural, three-dimensional objects like wire mesh armatures, plaster gauze, fabric, and organic matter. The opaque, shadowy nature of the wax and the layered elements represent the effects of time passing. The neutral palettes that appear old or rusty imply the richness and depth of aging.
During the process of creating, artists often unearth stories from their memories. A testament to the many facets of personal family history, Bloodlinesis an exhibition of encaustic artworks by Flo Bartell on view at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art's McMeen Gallery from December 2, 2016 — January 29, 2017.
