February Newsletter
Morro Bay Art Association
From the President’s Desk

It's been a lovely winter so far.  There were lots of visitors to the annual For the Birds exhibit and we sold quite a number of pieces for our members.  Central Coast Watercolor Society and the new Aquarius exhibit promise to bring in even more visitors to our wonderful gallery.  A special thank you to all those who help spread art in the community.  We could not be successful without the helping hands of our docents, members, visitors and exhibit partners.  A giant thank you from the MBAA Board of Directors!

This 3-session class is designed to provide plenty of hands on guidance, allowing students to work from reference photos of their choice. Beginner to advanced are welcome.  Take one, two, or all three classes.

“For the Birds” opened our 2017 show schedule with great success, & with firm defiance of the slang interpretation of its title! The show has attracted a phenomenal number of visitors to the gallery, unusually large sales, and rave reviews! Many thanks to all participating artists and artisans who exhibited in the show and to our geat team of gallery volunteers who pulled it all together.  Yes, presentation matters! Winner of the “People’s Choice” award goes to “Wild Blue” by artist, Hedy Hale. Running a very close second is “Crow” by artist, Margareta Lund.  Congratulations to both of you!

As the sun moves through the sign of Aquarius, we open on February 9 with the Central Coast Watercolor Society’s annual juried exhibition, “Aquarius 2017”.  This is always an exceptionally beautiful show, and we’re honored to have the opportunity to host them in our Russell Gallery through March 20.  Welcome CCWS! Concurrently, in the Main Gallery, we present “Striking Oil”, showing off our many accomplished oil painters.  It’s been said that oil and water don’t mix, but we’re here to say, they may not mix, but they co-habit beautifully! Don’t miss our opening reception Sunday, February 12, 2 – 4 pm.

Behind the scene, there’s lots going on in preparation for some of our upcoming shows. “Homage to the Ranches” has the Thursday Painters leader out knocking on ranch doors, asking owners’ permission to allow artists to paint on their properties.  They’ll soon release their March / April schedule of painting locations, which will be filled with SLO county ranchlands. Stay tuned for more information! We greatly appreciate the collaboration and support of the Thursday Painters in our gallery exhibits, as they did so beautifully in our 2016 show, “From the Arboretum”.

In response to questions about some obscure titles of our upcoming shows, we’ve added an “INFO” link to our online Exhibit Schedule (see Gallery \ Exhibit Schedule). Here’s hope that the expanded description of the shows’ themes give you the information you’re looking for; however, don’t let the titles constrain your creativity!  Feel free to use artistic license to interpret the themes in your own personal way.
Drag Central at the Art Center
Art Center Morro Bay is a wonderful venue for all sorts of community art events. Drag Central, a local SLO County organization, held its first ever informational workshop on developing the Art of Drag.

The evening event was alcohol-free and family friendly with attendees of all ages. Lots of laughter and good fun, judging by the hoots and hollers from the crowd. Cabaret singing, lip syncing and a high-heel walk were just some of the highlights.

Consider us for your next private party, fundraiser, or donor function.

SECOND MONDAY DEMO
with LARRY KAPPAN
February 13, 3 - 5 pm
Larry has been an art teacher at the high school, college and university levels.  He was a participant in the I Madonnari Street Painting Festival in San Luis Obispo for 12 years. He initiated the Santa Maria High School mural project, where he taught art for 23 years.  This mural includes over 40 panels depicting reproductions of famous paintings.

This demonstration will consist of three examples while exploring the use of mixed media.  Upon drawing a still life in oil pastel, Larry will apply watercolor washes, demonstrating how to add darker colors to resist the lighter oil pastel.  He will complete this first example with oil pastel covering the wet surface.  In the second example, Larry will combine media not always
thought to be complementary.  In this case, ebony pencil and oil pastel.  Finally, he will establish how colored pencil and watercolor can successfully work together to create unique visual effects.

“It is my intention to let the art find its way.  The journey is fun for me.  The successful result, if there is one, is the reward”.
