Art Center Morro Bay

To champion art as essential to life and give our community a creative voice

From the President’s Desk

Celebrations this month in Morro Bay include, Cinco De Mayo, the Morro Bay Annual Car Show and Memorial Day.

Did you know, for those who are not registered venders, one of the benefits of MBAA membership, is the ability to sell your artwork at Art in the Park, from the gallery booth? This is on a first come, first serve, basis.  Be a docent or rover, sell your art and enjoy the day!   Income from the Morro Bay Art in the Park event helps defray costs involved with building maintenance, providing free art demos, reduced rate classes and workshops, and art scholarships.  Morro Bay Art in the Park is May 26, 27 & 28, 10am - 5pm.  For more information, contact Sue Palmer, or (805) 441-5722.
Join us for a demonstration of ceramics, Finding Inspiration in Whatever You Love, by local artist Giselle Massey, May 14, 3-5pm.  Giselle makes cups, planters and bowls that are beautiful and functional!

Morro Bay Art Association is pleased to present, The Painters Group of SLOMA and their annual juried Brushstrokes exhibit in the Russell Gallery concurrent with MBAA juried exhibit, Thru the Lens in the Main Gallery.  Exchange day is May 15, 10am – 2pm.  Both exhibits are open May 17 through June 25, with opening reception on Sunday, May 20, 2-4pm.  Don’t miss the silent auction for an opportunity to take home an oak easel and/or utility box filled with tubes of artist grade oil paint.
The People’s Choice Award in conjunction with Windows to Other Worlds, goes to Eric Krever for his painting, Rose Hill.  People’s Choice Award winners are allowed to enter a future show with all entry fees waived.  Congratulations Eric!
We still have an urgent need for volunteers and board members. Please give me a call if you would like to become the next Treasurer (or helper), Gallery Director, Docent Director, Gallery Maintenance, or are willing to share responsibilities in any of these positions.  Training is provided.  Please email me at: or phone 805-423-1100.

Membership in the Morro Bay Art Association runs from January 1 to January 1 each year.  Your membership dues allow the Association to present free demonstrations, pay the bills (we have them too!), provide snacks and wine at receptions, building maintenance and all the various and sundry expenses we occur regularly.  Please consider renewing your membership today for 2018 if you have not already done so.  Members receive discounted take-in rates for exhibitions and receive e-blasts and important newsletters.  And members are invited to the annual Holiday Award Dinner!  Click here to join today!

Go Figure

Mark©, Oil painting by Bodil Bacciarini

Go Figure is an affirmation of the embodied soul. Artists, by celebrating the human form, may themselves be observed through the embodied explorations they present to the viewer, offering up glimpses into their own soulful, lovely inner selves.  This art truly speaks to and of the human condition.

Exquisite portraiture, like the delicate charcoal Amber, by Bodil Bacciarini, is a prominent focus throughout the gallery. The portraits light up the space with bold intelligence and sometimes mirthful curiosity. The figure studies reflect attitudes and feelings like grief and joy. They show humanity of all ages and cultures. Two photographs can act as an example of the show’s scope: a young boy on a pony, Pirate on a Pony by Floyd Snyder in color captures the fresh fun of youth, while the black and white photograph, Gentle Man by Gary Johnson, depicts an elderly Asian man with homemade crutch and the biggest smile I have seen. Wide ranges of emotion and form might be expected in such a show and Go Figure does not disappoint. The surprise is the wide variety of media used successfully, from coffee grounds on canvas to wildly complicated color intaglio etching.

I am reminded of a comment about some of Rembrandt’s later portraits. Speaking of one of Rembrandt’s portraits of a young girl, art historian Michael Kitson notices a new objectivity in Rembrandt’s portrayal of the figure. “He does not seek to dramatize it, caricature it or make it appear in motion, but is content to represent it for its own sake.”[i] Go Figure does the same. If you need a lift, see this show.

So much goes on behind the scenes, and changes occur seemingly by magic. Truthfully, Art Center Morro Bay is only as successful as the volunteers who manage and operate it.  Currently, we have an urgent need for board members and volunteers.  Although not everyone is able to give as tirelessly as others, we need your support, now!  Many of these positions can be shared or arranged to allow working with a partner.

Here are some of the areas in which we can use your expertise:

Art in the Park (set-up & tear-down, staff MBAA booth, provide vendor breaks)
Hospitality (set-up food & coffee, set chairs, tidy up activity room)
Finance Assistant (make deposits, assist Treasurer)
Maintenance (light building upkeep)

Please contact me if you would like to become the next Treasurer assistant, Marketing Director, Gallery Director, Docent Director, Adult Education Director or are willing to share responsibilities in any of these positions.  Do you love to be around people, work on your computer at home or possess book keeping, social media or database skills? Would you be able to serve on a committee?  If you have ever considered one of these impactful positions, now is a great time, and training is provided.  Email Pat Newton at or phone: 805-423-1100.
